Summer Schedule

For July and August we will be shifting to the summer schedule we discussed this last Wednesday at home community. This will be a more laid back schedule and allow for a much needed break from teaching and provide time for some community outreach.

Every other Wednesday will be dedicated to some missional outreach. The first two projects we as a group have decided to focus on for the month of July are:
- An area Litter Clean up
- Gorilla style marriage campaign

I will post all of the fantastic missional outreach ideas we had as a group and we can be pondering what some of the next projects are we want to tackle for the summer.

The other Wednesday will be much more laid back and dedicated to fellowship and fun as a home community. This could be anything from a hike in Forest Park or a friendly game of kickball down at a local school. Each of these events will be headed up by a different person in the group. If you sign up for an evening it is up to you to plan out the evening for the group and coordinate it. The skies the limit but please remember to make it kid friendly.

Outlined below is the upcoming months of July and August and how the schedule breaks down:

July 4th - Happy 4th of July! No HC
11th - Missional Outreach
18th - Fun and Fellowship
25th - Missional Outreach

August 1st - FOOD, Fun and Fellowship
8th - Missional Outreach
15th - Fun and Fellowship
22nd - Missional Outreach
29th - Fun and Fellowship

If you are interested in heading up one of the Fun and Fellowship evenings take a look at your calendar and let me know which one you would like to sign up for. We will need 4 volunteers for the months of July and August. You can either leave a comment below or email me personally at m_dillner@hotmail.com.

Looking forward to some good times in the summer sun!

MARRIAGE ANYONE?

Here is a rough concept for a marriage propaganda poster.
Yes, the ring and format is lifted directly from the monopoly game.
I think a fimalar icon it could really help spark curiosity.

Prayer Need

Jonathan and I would like to ask for your prayers today. We got a call this morning that Jonathan's mother had a stroke last night. She is currently in the hospital. She is paralyzed on her right side and because of this can barely speak understandably. Unfortunately, because of the location of the blockage the doctors are unable to operate. The positive prognosis is that the paralysis could resolve itself in a few days or months. The less positive prognosis is that the paralysis could be permanent. At this point they have no way of knowing.
Please pray for Gail (Jonathan's mom) for miraculous healing and hope during this time. Please also pray for Tom (Jonathan's dad) and the family as this was very shocking and is hard to grasp right now.

Clarity for Tonight

Since this is such a last minute plan we think it might be better to hold off on the barbeque this week. We had already been discussing doing a barbeque next week so let's postpone and plan the event for next week. We can talk to the whole group tonight so everyone can plan accordingly.
For something special I was planning to bring all the fix'ins for ice cream sundaes tonight. Great way to enjoy the hot day and celebrate our new location! If you want to bring your favorite topping feel free.
See you all tonight!

i think it might be a fun way to celebrate a new location! we can all talk and eat, right (just maybe not at the same time)?

Tonight

Just wanted to remind everyone of the change in locations for tonight and let you know a brief run down of what we will be discussing tonight.

We would love to follow up on the groups ideas and have everyone share what they have been chewing on this week in regard to missional community and outreach. Come with all your wild ideas and lets share them as a group. Our goal would be to identify one that we would like to pursue for the summer months.

We would like to spend some time in prayer and share any prayer requests the group has.

We will also be going over the shedule for the next few months and taking care of some house keeping issues.

Looking forward to seeing you all tonight in our new, larger location!
If you need help finding the Miranda's house please feel free to call myself at 503.704.1797 or Jonathan at 503.544.3841.

Community idea

So, this is a somewhat involved idea, but one I've been thinking about for a while.

One thing that I feel has a huge impact on current culture is the breakdown of families in today's society. Specifically, how divorce has changed the family (which in then changes our children, which then changes...)

Holly and I have talked a lot about doing some underground propaganda style posters, screening them by hand, and putting them up with wheat paste old-school-propaganda style. Making them look straight out of the 40's, with words like "FIGHT" then the payoff is that your fighting for your marriage.

All of our ideas are in their most infant stage right now, but I think marriage is something that everyone cherishes, regardless of beliefs (as in nobody actually gets married telling themselves that this is a temporary position). I like the idea of doing something that is in perfect alignment with Christian values, but something that non-Christians could easily support, if at least in non-disagreement.

Anyway, that point would be to try and affect culture with our gifts, some of which are design, marketing, organization, web-building, crafts-type objects, etc. I think this may be something that could use all those gifts, and allow us to at least begin a conversation about how marriage is really a forgotten promise that is no longer honored among Christians and non-Christians alike in America. And that if done in a way that's 'hip' or 'cool' could attract the attention of a hard-to-reach demographic.

I have tons of thoughts on this but I'll keep this email short. (er).

Missional Thought for the Day...

My idea for a missional focus is to somehow connect with the latino population in North PDX. My idea came from Maria who sells us tamales at our house each week. She speaks a little english, but when she is here we speak spanish. I have been thinking about my time in Guatemala and how it would be nice to continue that service to the "chapins" in my community here in Portland. It's a broad idea, but one that has been festering for a while. Buena suerte!

How about the rest of you? What have you all come up with? Juany

fathers day

A special happy "first" fathers day to juanny.

Again congrats.

New Meeting Location for the NoPo HC

Were excited about change.

Arbor lodge HC / NoPo group is moving to the Mirandas. After last week having people in every chair and still people were sitting on the floor (we were even missing a few folks). We're full here to say the least. Our cozy casa is bursting.

Were going to jump right in on changing the location to this wednesday 6/20. The times will be the same (gather between 6:30-7:00, start at 7:00, and wrap up by 8:30 for those with urchins needing bedtime).

Location:
1634 NE Saratoga St
On the corner of NE 17th and Saratoga. One street N of Dekum.
Thanks to Jason & Erica for opening their home for us.

feel free to email with any questions: strator71@gmail.com

hope everyone had a good weekend and fathers day.

EAT - GOOD - FOOD

So I just spoke with Holly and I think we have things coordinated for the Potluck tomorrow night.
Here is how it is breaking down:

Glaspey's - delicious chicken dish and scrumptious brownies
Eder's - another delicious chicken dish and yummy ice cream with berries (for brownies of course)
Dean's - an ever healthy salad
Peil's - everyone's favorite hummus with veggies . . . and maybe some rice???

For the most part the meal should be covered. If anyone else wants to jump in and add anything please leave a comment otherwise we will see you all tomorrow.

1st Wednesday Potluck

It is the first Wednesday of the month tomorrow and that means Potluck! I have been putting off posting because I am completely short on ideas for the potluck so I thought I would just throw it out to the group. Should we try to brave the rain and do a little barbeque??
Let me know what you all think and what you would be willing to contribute to the dinner. The Eders will cover the rest.
See you tomorrow night!

EAT

Hey. What you guys wanna do for potluck? I could go for another burrito bar, personally. There is also a decent chance the Glaspeys will just bring over a crapload of left over pizza. If you are not a fan of that solid greese that forms on melted cheese after it has been refridgerated, throw down your suggestions.

thanks.

DEBATE TONIGHT

Hey Everyone.
The 2008 democratic presidential candidates are debating "faith and family values" today at 4.
Thanks to modern technology (and my husband's love of electronic gadgetry) we're gonna watch it at our place at 6:30-ish. We'll get a bunch of pizza, come on over around 6 to get a slice before the debate, just in case the candidates make you loose your appetite. I'm going to invite a big crew, feel free to bring kids too.
