my first blog.
so, I figured that in order for tom and i to be considered official members of this home community we may want to consider contributing to the blog. (however i do realize our early deprature from the camping trip may have prompted us to be shunned for life... but we'll take our chances)
i want to thank everyone for making our one night of camping possible (we are still camping novices and didn't want to jump in too quickly) and welcoming us into the group. we had a lot of fun (despite a few hang-ups) and with everyone's support the hang-ups made the trip interesting, rather than ruining anything (or anyone).
we'll miss you guys tonight, but look forward to seeing eveyone again next week!
oh, and by the way Millers'... we need to arrange a SPADES rematch. team tom and abbie are not through with you yet...

Rolling Rolling Rolling
I'm kind of a jerk guys. Because I'm about to brag just a little bit.
For this weeks car, I got approval to drive beyond the normal 500 miles a week limit, and take a press car camping, plus, it's this: 2007 BMW X3.
There's room for two more to drive down with Holly and I, although, we don't know when we're leaving yet. Hopefully between 12-2. Hopefully.
Also, hopefully we can all send some of our bigger stuff with Tom Piel in the truck.
Anyway, we'll be seeing you all soon, rolling.

Pizza at Deans
Just a note that we are going to order a few pizzas to have on hand tonight so no one will starve while helping :) Thanks in advance for the help and support!
camping details
okee doke. so it looks like the teams switched up a bit since the deans won't be able to come. dinner on saturday night is going to be done by:
-chris and court
-jason and holly
-tom and rae
on sunday night:
-nate and robbie
-juany and emme
-tom and abby
jason and erika miranda (and their three hooligans) are also coming (not until saturday) and they're going to bring s'more goods. make a note that the dinners need to feed 17 mouths (this does not include the 2 babies). it's a lot so plan accordingly.
remember that dinners are the only meals that we'll collaborate on. dinner on friday night and breakfasts and lunches are going to be done individually and whenever you're hungry.
us P's are planning on leaving around lunchtime on friday so we should be rolling into GP around 5ish. i'm not sure what cell coverage is like out there, but i'll bring mine with me just in case.
directions:
* I-5 south (about 250 miles, just over 4 hours)
* exit #55
* go south on 199 for about 6 miles
* turn right on willow lane, 2.3 miles to the park entrance
we will be in group site: P G2 in schroeder park.
there are coin operated showers- $.25 per 5 minutes.
it looks like we're only going to be allowed to park 3 cars at the campsite (overnight). however, we can park the rest of the cars at the day use park for free. i'm not sure how far away that is, but it suggests walking back to the campground so it can't be all that far. worse comes to worse, we'll use our 3 other cars as shuttles. obviously, don't bother parking in the day use lot before you've unpacked your vehicle and set up your site.
so this is where i become super overprotective, freak mom...
i think everyone knows that stella is fatally allergic to peanuts, peanut products and peanut dust. i want to ask you guys if you can leave the trail mix home. i know this is probably way too cautious, but i'd rather be way overly cautious than stabbing my 2 year old with epipens and going to the ER. please, please read over the ingredients of the food and snacks you buy (whether they're to share or not) and just be sure that it's not processed in a plant that shares equipment with peanuts (it will say in bold at the end of the ingredient list on the nutrition label- this includes most chocolate, candies, and lots of different snacks and mixes). if you do decide to bring a snack that could have had potential contact with peanuts or peanut dust, please just let me know. i'm really nervous about not being able to constantly watch her and have complete control over what she eats, but i know that camping is about letting loose and sharing food and fun. if you guys could just help me be aware of what she's eating, that would rock. i'm also open to other ideas and suggestions. okay, thanks for letting me be a freak about this. i'll let you know where the epipens are when we get to the site. heh.
so i think that covers it. email or call if you guys have any questions and we'll see ya'll by the river!

CAMPIN'
Hey everyone--
We ran into Tom and Abby at Kennedy School last night… and they said YES!
(they are gonna come camping) YIPPIE!
So, both they and the Millers I believe need sleeping bag and tent accommodations. Can anyone who has extra stuff they are willing to share please list it here?
Then we can send Jason (and anyone else) a scavenger hunt for anything not covered.
Thanks. This is gonna be a blast!

camping trip business
so...
our camping trip is next weekend! crazy how fast that snuck up on us.
please go back and check out this post and let me know if you have any questions.
since we're doing group meals in the evenings, i'll go ahead and shoot kari and the eders my sister's email addy so you guys can coordinate. we might want to start talking about what our meal plans are.
((kari... do you guys know if you'll be able to make it or not?? not a big deal if you don't. we can be flexible right up until the trip if necessary.))
i think that tom and i are going to head down on friday morning- we can check in any time after 2pm. if anyone else wants to caravan, we'd be happy to coordinate with you.
i still don't have a count of who would be interested in renting the rafts. i'm wondering if, at this point, we shouldn't just wait to work that out until we get there.

PRAYER ANSWERED and PRAYER NEEDED!!
We have been praying for our friends, the Tuckers, in Central Asia more diligently after our 'prayer' month and we just received wonderful news that they have found a home that will be perfect for them!! They even have time to do a few renovations before they move in which will be so helpful to make it more liveable.
They have given us more praises and requests so if any of you feel led to pray as well - here they are...
* Praise for finding a home!
* Praise for good relationships among the PI (People International) field workers.
* Pray that our religious neighborhood would welcome us well.
* Keep praying for suitable language helpers!
* Pray endurance for evangelizing and starting new relationships.
ALSO- I talked to Hannah Theissen this weekend and during all the prep that Jeff is doing for his surgery on the 21st they discovered what looks to be a heart murmur. So please pray that the doctors can figure out what to do and how to help that amidst being able to proceed with the surgery. If they can't resolve the heart issue Hannah said the surgery would be delayed, and they are really eager to get going so they can get back to Africa as planned. Please pray for healing and peace for Jeff and Michelle during all this health stress!!
Have a great week everyone!

I think it look's like me...
Margaret and I went to our first ultrasound appointment this morning. Our doctor wanted to make sure that everything was ok, considering Margaret's morning/afternoon/evening/whenever sickness. Everything seems to be going ok. The heartbeat was 116 bpm (I took note Rae Ann) and the baby had the correct number of apendages. It was cool to see and somewhat of a relief to know things are on track and healthy.
FREE BEER!
Hey everyone-
If anyone is available to help with all manner of tasks on the house remodel on Sat the 12th or Sat the 19th we would greatly appreciate it!! You don't need to know how to build anything - unskilled labor is very welcome! You can come for 2,4,6, or 8 hours - any amount of time would be helpful. We will provide lunch and beer! Call Bryan at 503.249.3802 or email him at bryanmade@comcast.net to let him know if you can come and when you would be able to make it.
THANK YOU!!!!

Wednesday - May 9th - Global Community
This Wednesday Jeff and Michelle Theisen are going to share about there experiences in Africa. They have lived in Africa for over 20 years. Jeff and Michelle are members of Imago Dei and are currently "home" on a scheduled rotation. The plan is to meet at our house (5810 North Haight) and talk about missional community, Africa, Portland, and how these ideas and concepts are related. Jeff will also be showing some video/dvd of their enviorment in Uganda and Sudan.
If you want to read and learn a little more about Jeff and Michelle before they speak with us check out their info at www.sudanpartnership.org/main.htm
Rick and Faye Meyer are planning to join Jeff and Michelle in Africa for a year. They are also members at Imago and have been preparing for this journey for the past 1-2 years. They will also be joining us to talk about what they will be doing to support Jeff and Michelle in this next year.
This should be an interesting conversation and one not to miss! Let me know if you have any questions.

calling all smarty pants
Hey all.
I am working on an application for a post-graduate program and I am writing a short essay on why poverty is a key issue facing society today. Chad mentioned a few weeks back that he had read somewhere that the US has enough resources to eradicate poverty today. We all read stuff on poverty all the time. I am just wondering if any of you have read anything particularly potent that you might be able to direct me towards. (I will need to site the source.)
If so, can you please try to bring it to Wed night? Thanks. I really appreciate it.
Holly
